Feng Shui in the Modern World: Thierry Chow's Journey in Redefining Tradition

In a world where tradition often clashes with modernity, Thierry Chow offers a refreshing blend of the two. A modern feng shui designer and entrepreneur, Thierry has made it her mission to redefine the ancient practice, making it accessible and relevant to a younger audience. Through her brand, Go Lucky, she has successfully merged traditional feng shui principles with contemporary design, all while breaking barriers as a woman in a male-dominated field.

Finding Her Calling: A Journey Across Cultures

Thierry Chow's journey began in Hong Kong, where she spent her childhood immersed in the rich cultural traditions of the city. At the age of 10, she moved to Canada with her family, where she later graduated from Sheridan College in Toronto with a degree in illustration.

Growing up, Thierry was no stranger to feng shui—her father, a renowned feng shui master with over 40 years of experience, was a constant influence. But Thierry wasn't always interested in feng shui – in fact, she had been adamant that she would never follow in her father's footsteps. "My whole life, I was like, 'I'm never going to do what my dad does—that's just not my thing. I was super confident with it," she laughs.

After graduating from university and returning to Hong Kong, Thierry found herself at a crossroads. At the age of 23, she was working 60-hour weeks teaching art to young children, a taxing role that took an intense toll on her mental health. "I came into society, worked a few jobs, and then I was kind of lost and depressed," she recalls. "I think at a certain point I was like, 'Oh, this is not what I want…I knew in my heart that it wasn't the purpose that I was meant to do."

It was at this time that Thierry found her calling during a fateful dinner with her father. "Suddenly, a voice was like, 'Feng shui is your calling,'" she remembers. "It was like a light bulb went off." The profound moment marked the beginning of her journey to redefine feng shui for a modern audience. From that day forward, Thierry became her father's apprentice, immersing herself in the ancient practice under his guidance.

With a newfound sense of purpose, she began blending her artistic background with her father's wisdom, creating a fresh perspective on the practice. Over the years, she has honed her skills while reimagining feng shui for a new generation, seamlessly merging tradition with her own creative vision.

Redefining Feng Shui: Bridging Tradition and Modernity

Thierry's decision to embrace feng shui was about more than just carrying on her father's legacy—it was about redefining it for a new generation, having often faced misconceptions surrounding the practice. Determined to dispel these myths surrounding the practice, she set out to show that feng shui is not about magic or superstition, but about rearranging one's environment to creating harmony and balance.

"A lot of people think it's sort of like witchcraft—like, 'If you put a stone here, it will help you make a million dollars in a month.' But it doesn't work like that," she laughs.

With a target audience spanning millennials and Gen Z, many of whom are new to feng shui, Thierry sought to make the ancient practice more relevant to modern life by incorporating elements of design, art, and fashion into her work. "I knew that was the easiest thing for modern people to understand—for example, fashion," she explains. "Everybody can dress in a modern way, so through that, I can explain some concepts of the feng shui philosophy."

Innovating Tradition: The Birth of "Go Lucky"

Driven by her core mission to make feng shui accessible to younger, modern audiences, Thierry launched her brand, Go Lucky, which breaks down the practice into nine easy-to-follow steps while maintaining the core philosophy of feng shui.

The brand offers a range of feng shui-inspired homewares and decorations, all designed with a modern aesthetic. Thierry's approach is rooted in respect for tradition while embracing innovation. "I'm not saying that we need to get rid of it," she explains. "It's about understanding the tradition and respecting it, and… creatively playing around with that."

Thierry's designs reflect this philosophy as she seamlessly blends traditional feng shui principles with modern aesthetics, proving that beauty and harmony can coexist. Through her work, Thierry aims to educate clients on the practical applications of feng shui, demonstrating how this ancient practice can be integrated into everyday life.

By blending the old with the new, she invites people to experience feng shui not as a rigid set of rules, but as a tool for creating balance, positivity, and style in their homes and lives. This philosophy of renewal and transformation is at the heart of Thierry's work, extending beyond design and into the way she encourages people to approach their own lives.

Renewal and New Beginnings

Thierry emphasizes the importance of using feng shui to create a fresh start, whether it's the beginning of a new year, a new season, or simply a new chapter in life by letting go of the old and making room for the new.

She recommends starting with a thorough decluttering. "The things that you have in your space are things that represent who you are and what you're going through. If you accumulate too much old stuff, then the energy is stagnant. By getting rid of it, you open up space for new things," she says. Thierry also suggests rearranging furniture to refresh the energy of a space and to fix anything broken or leaking, as these can symbolize unresolved issues or blocked energy.

For those looking to dive deeper, Thierry recommends a birth chart reading as a way to gain insight into personal growth and challenges. "It's good to know more about yourself. Through that, we give you a guide on what to look out for—the good and the bad," she says.

Embracing Feminine Energy: Thierry's Vision for the Industry

Despite her success, Thierry has faced her share of challenges. "I had quite a few moments of self-doubt," she admits. "I'm female in this industry, I'm a young face, and I dress very differently. I do get people judging me." Despite these obstacles, she has remained true to herself. "I think you really have to be resilient. You really have to stick to who you are," she says.

"I just have to be myself. Or else there's no point, really, to do anything."

As a woman in a male-dominated field, Thierry is passionate about encouraging female representation in the feng shui industry. "I'd love to see more feminine energy in the field," she says. "I think it's all about having that female touch to the industry, because it is so male-dominated."

To make feng shui more accessible, Thierry suggests appealing to younger audiences. "(Feng shui) can be quite intimidating for some people," she says. "I think it's just all about making it more fun; doing more projects that more than people can relate to."

Leaving a Legacy: Thierry's Message of Resilience

Looking to the future, Thierry hopes to leave a lasting impact on the feng shui community. "I want people to remember me as the person who stood in her truth… not just in feng shui, but in life," she says. "I want to set the example that you can just do it."

Her journey is a testament to the power of following one's calling, even in the face of adversity. "If this is something that you feel like is your calling, just go for it," she advises. "It's okay that people will judge you, and maybe a lot of people won't understand at first, but eventually, you will push through."
